Why are there so Many Different Styles of T-shirt? - Shopping - Clothing

Since their introduction as an undergarment in the 19th Century, t-shirts have become a staple item in just about every single wardrobe in the world. Their simplicity and flexibility has made them one of the key fashion accessories for men, women and children. They first took their current form when adopted by the US Navy and after were adopted by people who worked in other particularly physical environments. Since the first T-shirts with the basic 'T' shape, the garment has evolved and developed into several variations on the same basic design. This is thanks to its extreme popularity and the simplicity of the original design. Most variations have been developed for similarly practical reasons. Crew NeckThis is another name for the basic T-shirt. The 'crew' part of the name most likely coming from the Navy adoption. The crew would wear something with this neckline while officers would wear shirts with collars. V NeckV-neck style t-shirts have an angled 'V' shape dipping f rom the neck outer edge down from the chin. These can be shallow or plunging depending on the wearer. A ShirtThis is the 'PC' manufacturers name for a vest or what is sometimes called a "wife beater". The 'A' stands for 'athletic' shirt but this style of t-shirt is also worn as an under garment. Vests have a dipping curved neckline, have wider sleeveless armholes and are often very thin fabric.Long SleeveJust like a T-shirt except with full length sleeves and is often worn with a regular t-shirt over the top. Scoop NeckPredominantly worn by women, scoop necks have a neckline which swoops low enough to display a large amount of cleavage. Women can wear them for sports or as casual wear. Tank TopA tank top is basically a t-shirt with the sleeves cut off. In American-English tank top means something like a vest, while in English-English tank tops usually refer to more of a jumper style garment than one with thin fabric. However, t-shirt tank tops became popular in the 70's-80's for sports men and rock stars. In terms of style these would be considered somewhat funny t shirts by today's style. However there will always be a place for a cool retro t shirt in regular fashion. Tall-TThis type of T-shirt has been developed through hip-hop culture. This is basically a regular t-shirt design but is extended from stopping at the waist, down to the about knee level. This is probably in reaction to the gravity defying waistlines plummeting down hip-hop fans legs at present.
